Jeans should be simple…but it isn’t. The sizing can be wildly different, nothing looks right under changing room lighting, and you end up leaving empty handed and frustrated. It doesn’t have to be that way. A little bit of preparation goes a long way, and these six tips will help you actually enjoy the experience and come home with a pair you love.
1 Go when you have time
Don’t shop when you’re rushing or stressed. Give yourself plenty of time so you can browse properly and try things on without feeling pressured.
2 Wear clothes that are easy to change in and out of
Avoid fiddly buttons, fiddly shoes or layers. The easier it is to get changed, the less flustered you’ll feel and the more pairs you’ll actually try.
3 Pick a style and stick with it
Decide on your style before you go. Whether that’s slim, straight, wide leg, or anything else, and focus on that. Trying everything at once just leads to confusion.
4 Try that style across different brands, rises and washes
Once you know your style, explore it fully. The same cut can feel completely different depending on the brand, the rise, or the wash.
5 Don’t be disheartened by the sizing
Sizing varies wildly between brands, it’s just a guide. Take your usual size plus the one above and below into the changing room so you’re not going back and forth.
6 Take photos in the fitting room to compare
It’s easy to forget which pair was which once you’re back on the shop floor. A quick photo of each one means you can compare them side by side before deciding.
One last thing…
…style them up before you decide. No pair of jeans looks its best in a changing room. The lighting is harsh, you’re probably in your socks, and nothing is styled. Before you dismiss a pair, tuck your top in, pop on a belt, put your shoes on…
You might be surprised at what you nearly put back on the rail.
