We throw the word “stylish” around a lot, but do we all agree on what that means? For me, ‘stylish’ doesn’t mean trendy. It doesn’t mean expensive. It doesn’t mean oversized sunglasses and a big swishy coats!
What it actually means to me? A well put-together outfit.
It’s All About Cohesion
When an outfit works, you can feel it. Everything looks like it belongs together – the colours, the fit, the finishing touches. Nothing is fighting for attention. Nothing looks like an afterthought. The outfit looks complete, and that’s what makes it stylish.
Stylish and “Taste” Are Two Different Things
This is what I find really interesting. I can absolutely appreciate when someone looks stylish, even if what they’re wearing isn’t something I’d ever wear myself. A maximalist outfit, head-to-toe pattern, a style completely different from my own – if it’s been put together with intention and the whole look feels cohesive, that’s style. Full stop.
And Here’s the Good News
Once you understand that style is about cohesion rather than keeping up with trends, it actually gets a lot simpler. You don’t need to buy new things every season. You just need to understand your shape, your colours, and how your pieces work together.
A simple, well-matched outfit will always look more stylish than an expensive, trendy one that doesn’t look quite right.
So, Am I Stylish?
Maybe! Am I ‘trendy’? Sometimes! My outfits are pretty simple and, honestly, a bit repetitive. I like knowing what suits me and what doesn’t. I stick to what works. I’m not experimenting with bold new looks every week — and I don’t want to be.
But understanding what style actually is has made getting dressed so much easier. Because I’m not chasing something I’m not. I love how I dress, and that’s that!
That’s all there is to it really.
